Get Off Your Lazy Butt!

By Jonnique Adjmul

“The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.”

There’s a funny thing about motivation. In order to get things done, you must be motivated. Motivation is the desire to do something. Therefore, you must have the desire to do something if you want to get it done. This is where we tend to have an issue.

We all have something we want to do, whether its to exercise, do chores, or write a blog post. But is desire alone enough to get those things done? Desire can’t go to the gym…desire can’t wash the dishes…desire can’t post a blog. So what moves you?

You wanna get something done, then get off your lazy butt and do it! Easier said than done, right? Well, the more you talk about it, the more time is wasted. If you want to get things done productively,

Set realistic goals. Setting goals that you know you can achieve makes it easier to motivate yourself to do the things you want to do. Make sure your goals mean something to you, and set a deadline to complete them. For each major goal you wish to achieve, set smaller, more manageable goals. For example, if your major goal is to lose weight, say 20 lbs, then smaller goals would be to lose 1 lb each week, choose healthier food options, and exercise at least four times each week.

Don’t forget to reward yourself. Think of it like winning a game (i.e. Candy Crush Saga, or Angry Birds). When you make it past each level there is some sort of celebration or incentive to keep going. Rewarding yourself after each “win” (i.e. succeeding in losing 1 or 2 lbs per week) motivates you to keep it up, no matter how big or small the accomplishment.

Maintain positivity. “Why do I need to stay positive when I just want to get this done?” If you have a negative attitude toward something, a goal or a task, you are more likely to become discouraged. Having a positive attitude, by telling yourself “its no big deal” or “you can do it,” will keep you encouraged. Positivity is contagious, so you’ll manage to encourage others just by being positive.
